Law 92 of March 30, 2004 establishing the Day of Commemoration for Victims of the Foibe (Sinkholes)
Law 92 of 30 March 2004 establishes that a day be set aside to commemorate the victims of the sinkholes, the Giulia-Dalmatia population’s flight from the eastern border, and the award of a recognition to the families of those who died in the sinkholes. Article 3 of said Law envisions that a purely honorary award, with no monetary compensation, in the form of a special metal insignia and corresponding certificate be issued upon request to the surviving spouse, children, grandchildren, and in the absence of same, of relatives up to the sixth degree of persons who between the dates of 8 September 1943 and 10 February 1947 were murdered or forced into sinkholes in Istria, Dalmatia, and the provinces of today’s eastern border.
Requests to receive the award will be evaluated by a special commission and must be submitted no later than ten years from the Law’s entry into force, i.e., by March 2014, directly to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers by means of a special application form accompanied by a signed affidavit.
