Civilian use of Drones: a Conference and Demonstration at the Embassy of Italy in Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C., July 12, 2016 – Yesterday the Embassy of Italy in Washington, D.C., in collaboration with the Institute for Education of Washington, D.C., hosted an event on the civilian use of drones. The event included a panel discussion with American and Italian experts of Dronitaly and Aviation Works. David Edelman, Special Assistant to President Obama for Economic and Technology Policy moderated. The conference addressed a number of legal issues related to the use of drone technology on both sides of the Atlantic in the fields of agriculture, public safety, homeland security, journalism and the media. The drone sector is expanding from the initial development of the miniature aircraft to the employment of the device as service provider, a use that could be quite profitable in the future. The discussion was preceded by an applied demonstration of drones in flight.

The Italian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC is the acronym in Italian) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the U.S.A. both defined rules for the civilian use of drones in 2015, balancing the need to support innovation, and the requisites of safety and privacy. Thanks to the new regulations of ENAC, Italy is expanding its industrial lead in niche sectors of: algorithms for automatic pilots, electronic design software and precision components.

“I am particularly pleased for today’s event on the topic of drones, a subject that will surely have a significant impact on a number of economic sectors and on several facets of our daily life,” commented the Ambassador of Italy to the United States, Armando Varricchio, “This event takes place within the framework of a multifaceted commitment that the Embassy and the diplomatic and consular network of Italy in the United States are expanding in the fields of innovation, scientific research and technology – areas of strategic importance in the bilateral cooperation between Italy and the United States.”
